Beyonce’s “Dream Girls” Diet

Beyonce's Dream Girls DietIn Hollywood, the list of actresses is endless. I don’t understand why casting directors choose people who must undergo extreme makeovers to fit the part. Beyonce Knowles is one of the latest starlettes that had to drastically alter their weight in order to be Diana Ross is this year’s highly praised “Dream Girls.”

Knowles had to lose 20 pounds and keep the weight off for the production of the movie. She revealed that she used the Maple Syrup Diet (aka Master Cleanse Diet) to drop the pounds. It seems more like a misnomer that it is called a ‘diet’ because you aren’t actually eating anything.

The diet was first popularized with its emphasis on fresh lemon juice, purified water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. It’s also been reported that Knowles used Natural Tree Syrup, a blend of maple and palm syrups, in her cleanse.

“I had to lose it really fast, so I fasted and only drank liquids and [had] fish and protein shakes and vegetables. For six months I was really hungry,” said the former Destiny’s Child front singer. Sounds like great PR for the diet if you ask me.

Why can’t Hollywood just higher people that are right for the part the way they are? Case in point, Bridgette Jones. Was it really necessary to find one of the skinniest actresses to play that part of a chubby English woman? It’s bad enough there is pressure to be thin and the undying fact that thinner stars get better parts but now they are also getting the parts heavier women could actually play.

After doing a little bit of research myself, here is what else I found out about this diet:

  • It is so effective is because you’re not getting enough nutrients or calories to maintain your body weight. You can experience headaches, nausea, vomiting, weakness and other nasty symptoms, not to mention being hungry for ten days.
  • People who do the diet regularly to clean their systems say they not only lose weight but feel more mental clarity, vitality and energy after doing the cleanse.
  • Most people who do the diet with the saltwater flush (which I’ve heard referred to as an oral enema) report excessive amounts of excrement in the hours following the flush. This saltwater drink “cleans out the colon.”
  • Doctors have noted that the fast is not a good way to lose weight because you aren’t getting any protein, fat or many other nutrients your body needs each day. It takes tremendous willpower to eat nothing for ten days and it can make you sick, or at least make you feel really bad while you’re doing it.

The bottom line is this cleanse may work if you can stick to it and do it under close medical supervision, but it’s not the smartest way to lose weight for the long term.
